Certified Nursing Assistant

The Advanced Certified Nursing Assistant program is designed to meet the growing needs of the community's healthcare system. It prepares students to perform routine nursing-related services to patients in hospitals or long-term care facilities, including phlebotomy. Successful completers are eligible to take the certification exams for nursing assistants and phlebotomists. Areas of employment include care in clinics, doctor's offices, home health services, hospice and laboratories.

  • 11-week program
  • Meets from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday
  • In addition to being a CNA, students will also earn certifications in CPR, phlebotomy, medical terminology and professional development training.

 

 

 
  1. Apply through Gadsden State Community College Skills Training Admissions & Registration. 
  2. Include a copy of driver’s license or state ID.
  3. Must attend Orientation prior to class start date.

  • ALL Phlebotomy exams up to date with an average of at least 75% to proceed to clinical.
  • ALL Phlebotomy skills validated with an average of at least 75% to proceed to clinical.
  • Phlebotomy final exam with an average of at least 75% to proceed to clinical.
  • Attend at least 75% of ALL Phlebotomy class and lab hours to proceed to clinical.
  • Attend at least 75% of ALL Phlebotomy clinical hours to complete the phlebotomy portion of the course.
  • Score at least 75% on your clinical evaluation tool to complete the course.
  • ALL Nursing Assistant exams up to date with an average of at least 75% to proceed to clinical.
  • ALL Nursing Assistant skills validated with an average of at least 75% to proceed to clinical.
  • Attend at least 75% of ALL Nursing Assistant class and lab hours to proceed to clinical.
  • Attend at least 75% of ALL Nursing Assistant clinical hours to complete the course.
  • Score at least 75% on your clinical evaluation tool to complete the course.
  • Nursing Assistant Final Exam with an average of at least 75% to complete the course.
  • If you are not permitted to attend clinical, you will not be allowed to complete the course.
  • BLS, First Aid, and Bloodborne Pathogens videos completed passing ALL skills and exams with each exam average of at least 84% to proceed to clinical.
  • Must have proof of the following 1 month before the first clinical rotation:
    • Immunizations
      • MMR x 2 or titer indicates immunity.
      • Hepatitis B x 3 or titer indicates immunity.
      • Influenza immunization, if in season (October – March)
      • Varicella (Chickenpox) or titer indicates immunity.
      • TDAP
      • COVID vaccination or religious or medical exemption
    • Two-step TB skin test with annual within 12 months or negative chest x-ray
    • Clear Drug Screen and Background check
    • Physical examination form releasing student for participation.
    • Gadsden State Community College Clinical ID Badge
    • Alabama Nurse Aide Registry – not appearing on the abuse list.

The essential functions below are necessary for health care program admission, progression, and graduation and for the provision of safe and effective care. The essential functions include but are not limited to the ability to: *

  • Motor Function
    • Handle small delicate equipment/objects without extraneous movement, contamination, or destruction
    • Move, position, turn, transfer, assist with lifting, or lift and carry clients without injury to clients, self, or others
    • Maintain balance from any position

    • Coordinate hand/eye movements
    • Push/pull heavy objects without injury to client, self or others
    • Stand, bend, walk, and/or sit for 6-12 hours in a clinical setting performing physical activities requiring energy without jeopardizing the safety of the client, self or others
    • Walk without a cane, walker or crutches
    • Function with hands free for nursing care and transporting items
    • Transport self and client without the use of electrical devices
    • Flex, abduct, and rotate all joints freely
    • Respond rapidly to emergency situations
    • Maneuver in small areas
    • Perform daily care functions for the client
    • Coordinate fine and gross motor hand movements to provide safe effective nursing care
    • Calibrate/use equipment
    • Execute movement required to provide nursing care in all health care settings
    • Perform CPR and physical assessment

**Note: Students may have physical exam with a family doctor, nurse practitioner or clinic of their choice. We will provide the forms needed for you to take to your exam. Cost may vary based on exam fees and immunizations needed.
